Updated: June 8th, 2008 The
following comments are from teens who have attended Our Mission
Possible workshops: “I
thought it was good. I’m not going to skip anymore. Now I
have an inner drive to succeed. I thought the class, the judge,
and all the volunteers were great. I actually had fun at the class
which is something I didn’t expect. Everyone was really chill
and cool and I liked that. I’ve learned that obstacles are
not conclusions or dead ends, but entry points. Thanks for the pizza!” “Mission
Possible was a great all around experience for me. I felt that Judge
Webb is one of the only judges that truly wants to help the students
instead of punishing them. Guy was extremely wonderful in teaching
kids to not be timid and to be able to be themselves. I was glad
Vanessa was there to put her input about the skipping situations
because she is Hispanic and also our age. At first I thought Mission
Possible would be a blow off, but it turned out to be something
that truly taught me that going to school is important for me to
be successful. I like the advice about the power to ask questions
and how the possibilities are endless.” “
I’m aware that if doors are open to me for success then I
should take the opportunity.” “I
learned how to be confident and share my ideas with other people
and I learned a lot about rhythm and teamwork.” “I
learned how to get self-control and also how to make better choices.” “I
learned that I need to think about my actions.
I think this program is really helpful because it taught me a lot
about other people and it was a lot of fun.” “Mission
Possible taught me how to choose my choices wisely and pick all
the good stuff.” “I
want to be a pediatrician to help save little kids’ lives
and let them live longer and take care of them and make sure they
have anything and everything they want because some kids don’t
have a lot of things that other kids have.” “This
program was educating and is going to help me make better choices
in my life.” “I
learned to be confident and share my ideas with other people. I
also learned about rhythm and teamwork.” “I
am aware that doors are open to me for success and I should take
that opportunity.” “My
vision is that I have a football scholarship at UT. I am playing
football and basketball and I am the best player on the team . I
live on campus in a big tall building.” “I
want to be a sign language interpreter. It feels good to be successful.” “I learned that you have
to decide that if you’re going to be the one to light the
flame or the one to take it.” “I
am now going to find the root of the problem and fix it.” “I
want to be an architect, build houses and apartments, and have my
own business, but first I have to go to school and get good grades.” “I
want to be the best mechanic in my town and be a great example for
the people in my town, so that everyone will want to be like me.
I love that y’all are going to give us certificates so that
we have something to have pride in.” “I
want to be a nurse because there are many Latino families that don’t
speak English and sometimes many of their children are dying, but
nobody to understand what they’re going through.” “I
would like to be a civil engineer because I am good at math and
I like to draw, so I think that would be a good profession.” “I
learned that fighting is not the answer…… you have to
think about the things you can do for yourself. My parents work
hard to get me an education and to give me what I need. I am glad
I came because I have learned how to take care of my own actions.” “This program taught me
that I make the choices that determine the outcome of my life. Others
sharing their personal stories helped us to empathize with each
other more." “I
thought it was cool. I learned about fierceness (projecting myself).
I didn’t know it worked so well….. well really I didn’t
know it worked at all.” “I
just think that it was great to learn how to express myself better.” “I think the (program)
was educational and that I learned a lot of new things. Thank you
for the education.” "This
was really a good (program). There were some things I learned and
some things that made me step up and really know what life is about.
I learned that you have to step up and don’t have to be smart
to be someone in life.” "The
adults here truly care about our futures. I felt inspired. I think
this program is giving inspiration and hope to those who previously
were unaware of their potential." "We
need more programs like this to inspire the youth. For some people
today was the first time they believed in themselves.Thank you so
much.” “I
learned how to be kind, and how to overcome fear. I also learned
how to find power in giving to others.” “I
realized a lot… like I can make choices. I realized that I
can do something in my life. It got me thinking about my future.” “I
learned not to care what other people think about me. The only person
you really need is yourself.” “This program has motivated
me to do better. I am encouraged more than ever and I will try to
do the same for others.” "My awareness of goal achievement
changed. In the past, I would always say that I still had time (to
change), but now I know that the time to start is now….. no
later.” “This program pulled
my hopes and dreams to graduate from high school and to be what
I really want. It showed me that there are people giving their time
to help us realize what choices we have.” “I feel that I am more
aware about the possibilities that I have and the consequences that
I have to deal with when making the wrong or bad choices.” “I am glad I came here. It
made me look at some things completely differently….. in a
positive way. I am glad I came and contributed to the program.” “This program opened my
mind a lot more. You told me that I have choices. I felt good that
you listened to what we had to say. I was able to express myself
without being shot down.”
“The program gave me great confidence in myself and showed
me that I have great power that I can use to help others to accomplish
their goals in life. Judge Webb, ever since Court you always gave
me inspiration to accomplish my goal to be a Marine General.”
“I learned that even though we all look different, we all
think the same way. It was good to hear the points of view of others
from different groups. School is important and we all take it for
granted when we should be thankful. My goals haven’t changed
but my views on how to get there have.” |
