CONTACTING SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS
Call before
you go. It is always a good idea to telephone first to find out
what hours the agency is open and if you need an appointment. Ask
questions. As you ask questions, write down the information given
to you. Common questions to ask:
• Do you have eligibility requirements?
• Does this service have a fee?
• Do you have a wait list?
• What type of documentation is required?
• What is the application process?
This resource booklet is intended to provide a list
of some of the most generous and caring organizations in Austin
community that are here to assist you in getting many forms of support
at either low or no cost to you.
Step 1: Be willing to Receive Support...
These organizations are committed to make your life better by connecting
you with the goods, services and support you desire that can change
your life for the better.
Step 2: Call, Set up an appointment to meet and greet...
Call the organizations listed here and: Ask them about the services
they offer. Get a contact name and phone number. Set up appointment
to go to their location to meet and greet them warmly. Be courteous,
kind, patient and persistent. Remember they desire to assist you.
If anyone fails to return your call, call back as often as required
with courtesy and reschedule. It's easy to forget to call. Always
assume the best.
Step 3: Be Persistent and Ask more Questions....
One key to success in life is to be persistent and NEVER stop "Asking
Questions". Go deeper, keep asking better and better questions
until what you desire shows up. Be courteous. You will get further
with people if you are polite on the telephone-even if the person
you are speaking with is not. When you continue to be pleasant,
other people will respond more positively toward you and will feel
more inclined to assist you. Keep Trying! Often the first person
you speak to will be the operator whose job is to direct your call
to someone else. It will help if you ask specifically for what you
need. Be prepared to repeat your question to the next person. If
that agency is not able to help you, ask if they know of another
place that will be able to help. Also, if you are placed on hold
for a long time, DO NOT HANG UP OR GIVE UP! Although it is frustrating,
stay on the line until you get the help you need.
Use this booklet as an entry point to an exciting adventure of reaching
out into your community and asking for any and all possible support
that that is available to you.
